Who we are

At the Federer Foundation, we believe that strong foundations built early in life matter for children, families and society alike.

For over 20 years, we have worked together with governments, partners and communities to ensure that children have the best possible start in life, but more needs to be done.

We continue to collaborate with key stakeholders, strengthening and supporting locally led efforts to expand opportunities for young children.

Our story

The (Roger) Federer Foundation was established on 24 December 2003 to support every child’s best possible start in life.

Our first project started in 2004 in Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, in South Africa. In partnership with IMBEWU-Suisse, we supported primary and high-school children with school fees, meals, uniforms, and sports coaching.

What began with individual children has grown into systems-level partnerships, focused today on early and foundational learning across Southern Africa, and on movement and play in Switzerland. For more than twenty years, working with governments, communities, and partners, our purpose has held: every child should have the chance to learn, play, and thrive.

“I worked tirelessly to achieve success in tennis. It demanded much from me, but I was fortunate to have guidance and opportunities. That’s what I want to provide for others, a chance for growth and success”

Roger Federer, President

Early childhood development

Why we invest in the
early years

Foundational learning levels remain critically low across Southern Africa, with gaps widening as children progress through school and leading to high drop-out rates.

Despite delivering some of the highest returns on investment, early childhood development remains largely underfunded.

Data shows that investing in these early years promotes better health, stronger learning, and lifelong success, creating significant economic benefits for both individuals and societies.
